Pppoem monitors the DSL connection of a Linux kernel 2.4.4 by reading the files /proc/net/pppoe and /proc/net/dev . It also may monitor other devices listed in /proc/net/dev or receive its data samples via standard input from remote peers started by ssh.
There is a X11 version 'xpppoem' and a text only version 'pppoem'.
xpppoem shows a graphics window like this :
Its ancestors are xpppload, xisdnload and xload.
The screenshot was made when pppoe was not very busy.
Both pppoem and xpppoem show text output like this:
Monitoring started 28 Oct 2001 18:48:09 when pppoe was offline.
At 19:44:58 it went online until 19:52:45. Next was 20:22:20 until 20:40:11
... and so on.
In most cases the connection went offline because it was idle. Only
once it was interrupted while the 1-second average and the 15-second average
showed recent traffic.
The screenshot was made at 21:14:14 when pppoe was online and quite busy.
The bottom line is updated once per second.
